Natural Makeup Solutions

October 21, 2016

I love makeup.

Ever since I got my first costume makeup kit at 5 years old, I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to wear it for real.

Something I am very committed to in regard to makeup is keeping it natural. And I don’t mean only doing natural looks, but making sure the products I use are pure and natural and something I feel good putting on my face.

We all know that makeup usually contains a laundry list of chemicals (not all bad necessarily) that if they work, we really don’t want to think about the side effects. I’ll leave you to do your own research, but I say why risk harmful effects when there are so many great natural options?

Ever since I started wearing makeup I’ve been on the hunt for quality natural makeup brands, and even though this is an ongoing process, I’ve found some great brands that I love to use and am so happy to share with you!

To start with, Cowgirl Dirt! I ordered my very fist makeup from them and I’m glad I did. They have a collection of mineral-based products that not only enhance your natural beauty, but also contain vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that nourish your skin. My personal favorite is the eye shadows. If you want cute-branded, natural and nourishing makeup, check out Cowgirl Dirt.

Pacifica is my current favorite! All their products are natural & vegan, and they have the prettiest ethereal theme. My personal favorites are the dream big mascara, concealer, and universal powder. They also have skincare and perfume, so they’re basically a one-stop-shop for your natural beauty needs! Check out Pacifica soon!!

This is a new brand for me which I am very excited to try! 100% Pure has a gorgeous selection of products, many of which are pigmented by fruits and veggies – how fun is that? All products are 100% free of artificial colors, artificial fragrances, synthetic chemical preservatives and all other toxins. In their own words, “health food for your skin.” They also have skin care and hair care.  Since I haven’t personally used them yet, let me know if you have and what you think! Check them out here

You’ve probably seen PF before at the grocery store or local drug store – in a few words, they are a healthier version of your regular drugstore makeup brands. They are probably the least “natural” of the list, but if you have more of a drugstore budget but still want something better for your skin, they are the best. Check out Physicians Formula

Enjoy! If you have a natural makeup brand you love, please share in the comments!

Buying Produce on a Budget

June 6, 2016

Produce 1

I would imagine you’ve heard many things about what we often call “produce”

  • fruits and veggies in other words.  “If you can’t buy organic, you may as well not buy at all”, “all of the produce sold in stores is such a waste of money – fresh from the farm or your backyard is the only way”, “only raw produce is good for you”, “only cooked produce is good for you – we can’t digest raw veggies”…etc. Any of these produce laws sound familiar?

Well even though I can’t personally say any of these statements are inherently right or wrong, there are a few things we can all agree on:

  • Fruits and veggies are beautifully healthy and an essential part of our diet
  • Fruit and veggies are readily available to us practically wherever we go, and all year round
  • Fruits and veggies CAN be bought affordably
  • Fruits and veggies are one of the most versatile ingredients available

Produce 2

Ok, let’s discuss these points now, from the top:

#1. Produce is beautifully healthy and an essential part of our diet. This is a well-established fact – fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and essential nutrients to supporting every system in the body. This is non-negotiable. Fruits and veggies MUST be a part of our daily diets, in one form or another.

#2. Produce is readily available to us practically wherever we go, and all year round. Yet another fact, you can find and purchase fruits and veggies at practically every grocery/convenience store (even gas stations) to be found. Although the quality and variety vary greatly from store to store, it is definitely available. In other words, there’s no excuse to not have fruits and veggies in your home and as a part of your diet at all times.

#3.Fruits and Veggies CAN be bought affordably –

I’m going to stop there today, but I’ll elaborate on the other 2 points in my next post. Stay tuned for tips on making produce affordable, and for ways to use it!

Goodbye Earwax!

November 6, 2015

Do you have ear wax issues?

Don’t worry! I know this is a yucky subject, but there will be no gross pictures or graphic descriptions (if I can help it). We’re going to be getting personal, though, so buckle up!

For me, my issue with excess earwax began about 3 years ago after I got pool water trapped in my left ear. That was resolved, but my ear just hasn’t been the same since. About once every 6+ months, my ear will get plugged to point of my having to hold it open in order to hear what someone is saying, and just recently I was at this point yet again.

Now, I have tried pretty much everything. Peroxide, over the counter ear drops, all the home remedies I could find online. I even went and had it clinically removed the last time. But nothing I have been able to try at home has worked. At all.

But, I had recently made an herbal oil for ear infections/aches, and I thought, “Why not use a few drops of that? The oil will help soften the wax, and the herbs will help kill any bacteria that may be making this worse.” So I heated a small amount til it was close to body temperature, and dropped a few drops in before bed. Next day, by using a bulb syringe and warm water, I was able to remove the marble sized amount that was obstructing my hearing, and I could finally hear again! It worked like a charm!

Everyone is different, but seriously – I couldn’t believe how well this worked!! And it is gentle, safe and actually healing to your ear. It’s a win-win in my book!

Here are the instructions for making the herbal oil, and then more detail of how to use it:

Preheat the oven to 200, and turn it off once heated. Place all the herbs in an ovenproof dish, and add enough oil to just cover them. Place in the heated oven, and leave in the over for 3-4 hours. Take it out, and let it sit on the counter for another 2-3 hours. Then, taking a piece of cheesecloth, strain the herbs off, making sure to squeeze the cloth to get every bit of oil out. Label and store in the fridge.

For those of you who don’t feel comfortable making something like this, this herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs is a great substitute. Just follow the same instructions as far as heating and using goes.

When you’re ready to use the oil on your ear(s), warm it up just enough to feel comfortable on your inner wrist. Using a dropper, drop 5-10 drops of oil in the affected ear while laying on your opposite side. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes. I would recommend doing this before bed so that you can now go to bed and lay with the affected ear facing down to drain out and employ the help of gravity. Next day, take a clean bulb syringe and fill it with warm water (skin temp – test on your inner wrist). Gently squirt into the affected ear, pointed slightly upward. Keep refilling the syringe until the wax is out. Now enjoy the relief!! 🙂

Hopefully, this will be just as helpful for you as it is for me. Please feel free to ask questions and tell me how it works for you in the comments!
